The Fun in the Sun races presented by the Houston Region SCCA at MSR Houston, Angleton, had lots of fun and sun, but also some rain and wind to challenge racers and — especially — the organizers and volunteers.
It was the best of times, with a little “worst of times” mixed in to make for an interesting Memorial Day weekend.
Saturday’s races went off without any significant problems, but a bad thunderstorm came in overnight, with wind damaging permanent and temporary shelters. Any drivers without cars in a garage probably had to sit in a damp car Sunday morning.
The storm also knocked down power lines in the area, which left the organizers and volunteers with limited ability to operate the usual electrical equipment and — most importantly — no air conditioning on a very hot day. Everyone took the situation seriously, but responded with consummate professionalism and general good humor.
As workers and competitors pulled together to get the course and paddock ready for competition, the racing — one sprint for each class in the morning and a slightly longer race for each class in the afternoon — proceeded after a short delay.
