| About Solo
Whether
known as Autocross or SCCA Solo, the skills required to be the fastest
car around a pylon marked course are the same as at Texas World
Speedway. While the competition puts a premium on driving skills - with
the fastest time often decided by a blink of an eye - this low-cost,
low risk motorsport gets your adrenaline rushing through your system
and makes you feel like you've just set the land speed record. This is
what makes SCCA Solo so attractive and entertaining. Solo is a low risk
motorsport due to the speed limits placed on it and is low cost because
you can use your daily driver - but, believe me, that does not reduce
the excitement level in the least.,
How many of you can say that you
wouldn't get a thrill going into a 90° corner at 50 mph, holding the
gas pedal to the floor until the very last second and then cramming the
brakes to just before full lock-up so that you can negotiate the
corner? Imagine what it is like weaving back an forth through a series
of cones - with your gas pedal foot to the floor - and still keeping
the car under control; you finish the run and are leading the
competition by .245 of a second . Will the competition catch you or is
your lead of 245 thousandths of a second ENOUGH? This is Indeed low
cost, low risk motorsports!
Yes, YOU can successfully compete in your mechanically sound daily driver street car! The Houston Region offers Street tire classes, Women's Classes, Open classes and
rookie classes. All of these classes are then broken down into like car
types and levels of preparation, so your Toyota Camry will
not be in head to head competition with a souped up Mustang Cobra. It
is not uncommon to see mom or dad competing against their 16-18 year
old son or daughter. This form of motorsport has more driver
participation than any other form in the country. Each year there is a
National Championship held in Topeka Kansas, where people from all over
the U.S. and Canada (and occasionally from overseas) compete to see who
the best drivers in the nation are. Last year there were just over
1,100 drivers in Topeka and this year I expect even more.
What class would my car run in?
SCCA Solo has five major competition
categories which are then broken down in classes of like cars.
The major categories are as follows:
Street Tire Category
Made up of a few National classes and several Houston unique classes,
this category is intended for the person "off the street" who had performed common
hot-rodding bolt on improvements. The National Classes include STS, STS2, STX, and STU.
The unique Houston Region classes include STA through STF, and STO.
Most of these cars are used on the street as daily drivers (thus
the name for the category) and they must run on DOT legal
Street tires. These are truly Street tires and not the DOT race tires you will find
in the other categories. Most of the cars in this category are driven to
the event on these tires.
Stock Category
This class is comprised of 9 classes, SS and from AS to HS,
divided according to performance potential and car type, covering
everything from Corvettes to Corollas. Cars are essentially
as they rolled off the showroom floor with some generally,
minor modifications allowed to expendable parts as defined
in the Solo Rule Book and must run on a Street Legal DOT legal
Race tires. These race tires, although DOT legal, are truly
intended for rafcing puproses only and are generally hauled
down to the event
Street Prepared Category
This is a category which allows a certain amount of
"hot-rodding" to the cars, such as wheel size & width, induction
and suspension changes. This class has 6 classes, from ASP to FSP and
there is a noticeable increase in performance over the Stock classes.
Many of these cars are still used on the street as daily drivers and
they too must also run on street legal DOT legal Racetires.
Prepared Category
This category is not intended for the street driven car, though a few
competitors do drive their Prepared cars on the street. These cars have
their interiors removed, one bucket seat, a roll cage, and extensive
engine & suspension modifications. This class is comprised of 6
classes, from AP to FP and they all run on Racing slicks. This category
often has SCCA Production and GT class cars in it and once again there
is a noticeable increase in performance over the Street Prepared
classes.
Modified Category
This is the class where you will find Formula Fords, F440's
, Sports racers and exotic production based home built cars.
This class is comprised of 6 classes, from AM to FM and all
of these bad boys are brought to the event on trailers. My
personal Favorite is the "Fiero from Hell" that
I have seen competing at the Solo national championships.
I believe that it is basically a Fiero body and interior attached
to a Formula Atlantic framework. Truly an awesome sight!
